Opal is the most colourful of gems. Its beautiful play of colour is unique, and fine examples can even be more expensive than Diamond. The play of colour consists of iridescent colour flashes that change with the angle at which the stone is viewed. This appearance is often called opalescence. The play of colour may consist of large, different flashes of colour (known as schillers), or maybe of tiny, dense flashes. The strength and frequency of the colour flashes is a certain factor in the value of an Opal.
